Agentless Application Virtualization: Enabling the Evolution of the Desktop

Today's IT departments must manage increasingly complex desktop environments that must be flexible and agile enough to accommodate changing business requirements. As a result, virtualization technologies have emerged that aim to improve existing environments and create a computing model referred to by IDC as virtualized client computing (VCC). IDC defines VCC as "a collection of virtualization software and delivery technologies that improve upon the limitations associated with a distributed desktop environment." VCC benefits organizations with greater mobility, simplified change and configuration management, application testing and faster application deployment, even across large and geographically dispersed organizations. In this study, IDC analyst Michael Rose discusses how VMware ThinApp, an agentless virtualization solution, addresses the challenges of desktop computing. It examines the benefits and drawbacks of VCC, and how solutions that combine desktop and application virtualization can enable a dynamic desktop environment, improve storage efficiency and simplify management.
